Loving this upgrade so far and well worth the $3. Lots of little features but they are very handy and cool. Love the feature to add someone to your contacts, the refresh is really cool, threaded comments and inbox are nice. well put together

    Hi,

We have a volume licence for Office 2008. We have a mixture of network logins and local logins on our 10.6.7 macs. Is there a way to get rid of the office setup assistant? Teachers are complaining that when students open word this always comes up and confuses students and wastes time.

    TIA
    :)

i've got to agree with others and say unless you were desperate it would be silly at this point to want a CDMA iP4.

With the next revision so close, the benefit of waiting could be immense and I be a lot of other people see that too.
What benefit? You don't know what the next iPhone will offer, neither do I. I couldn't see anything important that would come up. 4 is fast, decent camera, great screen. Other than the bizarre chant of "4G", I don't see anything it can add to sway me. Guess I'm silly, but I upgraded from a 1G iPod Touch, essentially. That was much slower, and missing iOS4 features, but I still made great use of it every day.
Why buy a 3G iPhone, when there are 4G phones available ?
There is only one 4G phone available (http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-03-4g-fastest-att-sprint-verizon.html), and it is a beast. You may as well carry a laptop as a Thunderbolt phone. (please don't say anything about Sprint )
I think Apple waited too long to bring the iPhone to Verizon. By the time they did many diehard Verizon customers had just bought Android alternatives. I think Apple got a little too sucked in by the exclusive money from AT&T, but in the end it might end up hurting them.
I don't think you understand the nature of big business contracts. Apple clearly put out a ViPhone asap. That's why it was Feb 14 or whatever. What kind of silly date is that? It was as soon as they could, dependent on whatever ATT contract there was, and then production/marketing time after that.
I stopped reading right there b/c I don't believe that.
We were on Tmobile for over a decade. I can count on one hand how many dropped calls I had, and ALL of them were with a dying phone that had given great service for over 2 years. (or due to the other side of the call) Maybe you aren't used to a provider that cares about this point.

    To the topic:
I think Apple overestimated demand mainly due to contracts. This country's SOP of 2 year contracts is a huge issue to people. And all the providers are increasing ETFs, making it worse every year. The only company (Tmob) attempting to make changes to this scheme is now planned to go away with the ATT purchase.

My $10 a month ($120 a year) web hosting account has 170 (thats right, 170!) gig of storage, something like hundreds of email accounts, php, ssh access, mysql, more, more and more.

True, it doesn't do all the fancy stuff that .mac does with sync'ing and so forth. But that isn't my point. My point is that we should expect more, much more for $100 a year because web hosting providers are able to make a profit by offering much more. If the users demand it Apple will come around. But not if people keep paying for the service as-is. So they upgraded the webmail client- great. The eagle really took a ***** today didn't it?

Lets say his girlfriends parents say it's ok for them to sleep in the same room. Also, lets say that you also know that your son is having sex. Lets also say that your son has been going out with this girl for 3 months. So would you let him or not?

i just skimmed through the thread, but as many said, I think your parents should let you and your girlfriend decide (or "one should let the kids decide";)). Just please use condoms.

If they already told you 'no', than I wouldn't go in an all-out war with them, unless you are ready to take off (something you would most likely regret afterward). Consider this is probably very awkward for them too, and I am not sure they would necessarily wanted to be filled in with the details. As long you clear that both of you two are informed and know about precautions and such, that should be enough.
Of course if they are very catholic, this could be an added layer of difficulty, but I am sure they would rather not become grandparents this early, no matter what the priests say.

    enjoy. ;)

I wonder, assuming this device ever does come out, could/would apple release two versions (CDMA and quad GSM) and then let you select which carrier's software to download to the phone (either at home, on the online order page, or in the store)? This would be far simpler than having either a just-gsm or just-CDMA phone and more cost effective than a dual radio version on which you choose which carrier/radio to use (which I believe was suggested earlier in the thread)...

That way, Apple could continue to sell the product through their own their rather huge network of stores and online. They could also have two versions, a "pro" (treo/HTC/Blackberry-esque QWERTY device w/ MS office integration and Mail/Outlook e-mail push) and a "consumer" (music-centric, smaller, no QWERTY), in keeping witht he rest of their lineup of products. Just a thought.

It goes to show you that they can still make a profit with $100 off. I guess the price gouging by Apple continues.

Not necessarily, it could be a loss leader. Apple's margin on products is generally 35%, however.

One of my clients is a huge, global corporation (that shall remain nameless), and they use Notes. I only support a smallish design department that uses Macs, and I quickly learned to loathe Notes.

Allow me to quote a rant I wrote about it on 10/8/02, after coming home from a long day of battling Notes issues at that client:

"Lotus Notes [6.0] for the Mac is a turd that they just keep trying to polish. Whoo hoo, it's finally Carbonized and sports the Aqua interface-- that's like putting a fresh coat of paint on an outhouse. This is the most half-assed Mac port of a Windows app since Microsoft Word 6-- scads of 8.3-named library files, a terribly unMaclike interface that is possibly the worst mangling of the 'web browser' metaphor that I have ever seen, and a complete inability to accommodate more than one user per machine, even on a multi-user based OS like Mac OS X. You'd think a company like IBM could actually assemble a team of competent Mac programmers, but judging by the quality of Notes for the Mac, they can't. Memo to IBM/Lotus: Half-assed Mac support is worse than none at all. Rebuild Notes [for the Mac] from scratch, or take it out back and shoot it. It makes Outlook/Exchange look like paradise, even with all the security and virus problems."

That client is now using 6.5.4, and I still hate it. Four years later, and it *still* wants to put the user data folder inside the Notes application folder by default when you install! Last week I ran Migration Assistant to move someone's data back to a PowerBook that had returned from being serviced, and Notes got messed up somehow. It was set to spellcheck all outgoing messages automatically, but lost the location of its dictionary. How do you think Notes would handle that? Just inform the user, "I can't spellcheck, but would you like me send out the message anyway?", right? Wrong! It wouldn't let the user send any mail at all, until I remoted in and disabled the spellcheck entirely. When I was back on site today, I had to reinstall Notes on her machine to fix it.

Which brings us to the problem of support. The only solution I can find for 99% of Notes issues on the Mac is to just reinstall the damned thing.

I could keep on going, but you get the picture.... Notes is a godawful abortion of a software program, and I would lead a much happier life if I didn't have to deal with it. IBM claims they want to improve it? Well they've certainly got their work cut out for them, don't they?

I can't see apple employees driving around remapping the world to get their own data base

No need. Apple would just license the map data from either Navteq or Tele Atlas. The map data that Google uses at present is TeleAtlas (Especially for Europe).

Really? you read every 120 page document that came with every piece of software you install? And understood it without a lawyer?

First, the English portion (or any single language) is only 5 pages, not 120. Why would you need a lawyer to understand the agreement? See below.

    From Apple's EULA (http://images.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/iphone.pdf)
Apple and its partners and licensees may provide certain services through your iPhone that rely upon location information. To provide these services, where available, Apple and its partners and licensees may transmit, collect, maintain, process and use your location data, including the real-time geographic location of your iPhone. The location data collected by Apple is collected in a form that does not personally identify you and may be used by Apple and its partners and licensees to provide location-based products and services. By using any location-based services on your iPhone, you agree and consent to Apple’s and its partners' and licensees' transmission, collection, maintenance, processing and use of your location data to provide such products and services. You may withdraw this consent at any time by not using the location-based features or by turning off the Location Services setting on your iPhone. Not using these features will not impact the non location-based functionality of your iPhone. When using third party applications or services on the iPhone that use or provide location data, you are subject to and should review such third party's terms and privacy policy on use of location data by such third party applications or services.

    Seems pretty straightforward.

Sure, Apple should have encrypted the file, not backed it up to your machine, and culled the database better. However, if you are worried about someone accessing this file from your phone or computer, you should be more worried about the fact someone has your phone or computer.
