Just what can Target say? "If you allow Apple do do something that might cut into out DVD sales we will intentionally sell fewer DVD" Kind of like holding a gun to your head threatening to shoot.

All we need now is the Target chairman slowly driving around Cupertino in a white Bronco with 200 police cars tailing him.

Of course they are less expensive. No packaging, no media, no store space, no shipping required.

    They should be less expensive.

If they were the same price this would be a serious problem. I still have a problem at the outrageous prices of CDs and DVDs because they are more expnsive than cassettes were, but cheaper to produce. It is all about greed and $$.

Apple wants to make money too. but they eliminated some considerable costs.

I'm a *total* Apple fan. I love everything from my MBP, iPhones, iPads....but the Xoom is a *damn* good device. I mean, seriously good.

It's not ready for the masses yet, but if you know even the slightest about tech (in its use, not in more technical aspects), it *really* is a superior device at the moment.

There are a few software quirks, but a sw upgrade or two and those are gone. Besides, the list of "quirks" in iOS/iPhone OS is still large :).

I own all of them and by business develops & deploys our services for the iOS platform, but the Xoom was given to me to convince me to port at least a UI of our backend service to the Android by a partner - and I'm *VERY* impressed by where the Android 3 platform and the Xoom is going. Enough to consider putting dev resources towards building an Android port.

Apple better watch out, they're flying high and iPad 2 is good, but Consumer Reports is right, the Xoom is good, and it won't take much more to make a good competitor. iPad 3 and iOS 5 better be a *huge* leap forward (and shed some of this Jobsian hubris he has from his ego, I love the guy and what he's accomplished, but his ego gets in the way sometimes, and I see it becoming more and more troublesome for AAPL).
    Motorola Xoom?

    Just my thoughts.

I think some of you are confused as to what Carrier preferences means. Its not saying anything about which iPad is selling better. All it says is which iPad people would like to have. It doesnt even mean which they do have. (AT&T iPad owner might want the Verizon one because of the bad service). So a AT&T iPad user may show under the Verizon numbers. Also its no shock the AT&T iPad is harder to acquire. Its most likely due to customers being use to the company. (example: mom buying her son an ipad will go to AT&T if they have AT&T phones.)

Remember a good deal of iPhone customers are still AT&T customers. So when they bought their iPad why not just by the AT&T one. So since the mass I users are already with AT&T it only makes sense that that iPad would sell better. Also understand that not all AT&T customers hate AT&T.

Heres my situation. I own a Sony DCR-SR42 HDD handycam. I have quite a few mpeg2 files saved on my old Dell laptop. They were all shot using 9M (HQ) and 16:9 Wide settings.

Recently converted to an iMac this past fall, and transferred the files to the new machine. My goal is to create a slideshow containing still photos and video clips in iMovie 09.

I purchased the mpeg2 Quicktime plug-in and downloaded MPEG Streamclip. Ive transcoded a test file into several different formats; however, they are all either squished or stretched when viewed using QT. The dimensions of the test file are listed as 720x480. Below are the results (compared to the original) using various Export options (and settings) in Streamclip.
    - DV (Compression: DV25; Standard: NTSC; Aspect Ratio: 16:9; Interlaced Scaling & Reinterlace Chroma checked by default on all Exports): image slightly stretched wider than original
    - Quicktime (Compression: AIC; Quality: 100%; Frame Size: 720x480 DV-NTSC): QT window opens as 4x3, and image appears squished
    - Quicktime (Compression: AIC; Quality: 100%; Frame Size: 854x480 16:9): image slightly stretched wider than original (same as DV above)
    - Quicktime (Compression: AIC; Quality: 100%; Frame Size: 720x480 Unscaled): QT window opens as 4x3, and image appears squished (same as QT/AIC/DV-NTSC above)
    - MPEG-4 (Compression: H.264; Quality: 100%; Frame Size: 720x480 DV-NTSC): QT window opens as 4x3, and image appears squished (same as QT/AIC/DV-NTSC above)

Am I missing an Export setting? Am I doing something incorrectly? How can I convert my mpeg2 files into a format that iMovie is able to import, and retain all the original settings?

Thanks in advance for any help!

KIA joined that group over a year ago (http://www.businessweek.com/blogs/eyeonasia/archives/2009/11/koreas_kia_opens_auto_plant_in_us.html). :D

Correct, though I hadn't said my list was all-inclusive. :p

IIRC, and more relevant to the post I was responding to, Volkswagen was looking at a plant site in Chattanooga at one time, but I'm not sure that ever went forward.

It will be interesting to see if Apple develops its own controller chip for ARM processors. Currently the Intel controller is designed for Intel processors that incorporate PCI express architecture. ARM architecture is quite different. Thunderbolt is currently designed for the standard Mac line of products using Intel Processors. All the mobile products are Arm based processors.

The idea of having a common connector like minidisplay port is quite awesome, and the utilization is all in the software control approach. Dual channel, full bidirectional, with the possibility of multiple protocols running simultaneously with very high data rates. Apple is just covering their future bases, and doing it very nicely.

I saw posts asking about backward compatibility possibilities. The answer is a definite no. But the future arrangements will be most interesting.

One post wanted everything to go thru a standard phone jack. Not at all likely or even possible.

Have you actually used it or are you just talking crap? The new version is actually really good and in my opinion BETTER than Apples product.

I wonder why the 2 plans have to be mutually exclusive. Why not download the whole database when you get it, for when you might not get coverage. And then automatically update when you do have coverage. When going somewhere, give priority updating to the current route and then download everything else. Maybe allow current route to be updated with EDGE/3G while whole database updates require Wi-Fi. Just my 2

The problem with this plan is that they're specifically bragging about stuff like construction updates, points of intrest, and traffic alerts.

In other words, you'll have a system that's constantly downloading stuff AND taking up 3 GB on your phone. I'd be happier to pick one or the other and not have to have the worst of both plans.

Your idea could work for another GPS app that's not built to highlight those kind of things, but that doesn't seem to be the app that Garmin wanted to make.

My guess is that the maps download to your phone and are not constantly being pulled in, so a mapped-out drive from one city to another that passes through a dead zone isn't going to result in an area with no maps. But that one small issue of getting stuck in a no-coverage area and desperately needing it is worrisome.

That's something I'd like them to clarify, actually.

Is it like Google maps and just downlaods "where you are" or is it downloding your whole state and the surrounding states? Or, like "North-East" or something like that?

The difference between those 2 systems could actually mean a lot for some of you folks, it seems.

The tea party is the republican party. There is NO tea party as third party. That's a complete fallacy. If they weren't a wholly owned faction of the Republican party, there would be tea party democrats too.

Pop quiz - name one tea party candidate who ran as a Democrat or name one elected official who claims to be a tea party member or supporter who doesn't vote with the Republicans.

YOU WILL GET DIFFERENT IMAGES IF YOU USE A 200mm EF Lens on a 7D (APS-C) and a 200mm EF-S lens on that same camera due to the FOVCF

Go and try it and come back...

    Edit to add:

Here is a great little one page explanation of EF vs EF-s (http://jefflynchdev.wordpress.com/2009/01/10/understanding-canons-ef-s-lenses/). I quote from it:

Canon EF-S lenses are designed specifically for the 1.6x FOVCF DSLR bodies but still require the same 1.6x crop factor to be applied as the standard Canon EF Lenses to get the equivalent field of view comparison. Again, this is because the physical focal length of the lens is the same, regardless of which camera it’s mounted on.

Which, once again, agrees with me.

I was surprised that it was only marginally faster than the GUI version (a little under 6 hours per unit), but SETI's FAQ explains that the GUI on a dual processor uses one processor for the graphics and one for the computation, so the graphics "don't count" much. And, when running SETI CLI version, you still don't get the benefit of the dual processors (except to run something besides SETI at the same time, of course) unless you explicitly start two SETI processes at the same time, each in its own directory.
I will report my results of single-CLI runs after I determine the effect of the Energy Saver settings and the effect of the -verbose option that reports progress in the Terminal window. Then I will try double-CLI runs.

    Thanks for the screenshots.

Slightly concerned that some services appear to be either missing altogether or lacking in functionality.

Hopefully we'll see them appear before the final version appears. It seems from the look of those screenshots that a lot of stuff has been re-written from the ground up.

I'm liking the look of the new web based features :)

Maybe I'm just too old school, but I'm a bit resentful of the fact that it's touted as a priviledge to have the opportunity to pay $2 to watch a missed TV show. I hope I'm wrong, but having joined the HDTV crowd about 6 months ago, I'm struggling to find a way to do what I've always been able to do for free in the past -- record a TV show at the same quality it was piped in to my home in the first place.

Good luck with that. The world of broadcasting is doing everything they can to keep you from doing it.

Time Warner Cable here in NC has HD DVR that works 'good enough' that has me not caring that I got rid of my TiVo after 5 years of having them. It records all the HD channels in full HD. I can get about 24 hours of programming in HD, or 70 - 80 hours in SD.
