I also work in a large engineering consulting firm that uses only Windows XP. I have been using my mac on my own for work for the last two years or so (Please no comments about using personal machines for work. I am aware). I would love to see some others be allowed to use Macs because I think they make sense for some jobs. It would not make sense for everyone to go to Macs because we have some windows-only software requirements.
I am interested to see what answers come. My major curiosity is how well the Macs integrate into an Active Directory domain. I don't want anyone in the company to be able to log into my personal machine, so I have not tried it yet.
AD Integration with OSX is fine. I've used a Macbook/Macbook Pro at my last two jobs as IT Manager [currently it's an MBP] with no issues. I logon and authenticate, have access to my Home folder, shares, printers, etc. We also have another MB and an iMac within IT for Web Development, etc.; again no issues.
As for support. Not sure what the issue is really. We get a full year of support on hardware and software, and have Applecare for beyond year 1. So limited OS support is FUD. We have 0 issues on a daily basis with OSX, and multiple issues with the XP/7 boxes. We also have another person in the dept running Linux, and they too have 0 problems. And no, it's not just because we're IT...we also have a couple of users running Windows XP/7 for support, on decent machines, and those too have issues. Not daily, but definitely more than we've had with any of the OSX and Linux boxes...
We are lucky to be running Exchange so the need for Entourage, or Outlook 2011 is moot. We can use Mail, iCal, Address Book, etc. with 0 problems. The only one in IT having email troubles is our Linux guy; Evolution is terrible [he said it, not me]. He uses the new OWA running FF, and it's fine...

Something that has occoured to me, is there is a missing feature on this forum. It's a feature that I have only ever seen on GameFAQs, but have never seen anywhere else.
The marking system. Basically, each post has a button on it, that when you click it, you go to a page where you can "mark" a message, You can mark it for spamming, flaming, etc... There is a variety of options. Anyway, once you have marked it, it goes into a todo list for the mods. They can then review this message, and remove it or change it.
Basically, it allows people to easily inform the mods if there is a bad post. Currently, you have to PM the mods. This makes it easier. Oh, and if you abuse the system, you get punished.
Anouther feature from GameFAQs, is the Karma system, which ties in with the mod system. Basically, when you get moderated, you loose Karma. And you gain one Karma per day, as long as you have at least one active post.
I suppose I've only seen these features at GameFAQs, because it is the scurge of all earth. And I love it.
MacRumors in the most friendly fourm on the internet, but GameFAQs has a wide variety of topics. It's the birthplace of many interesting things. Like the unholy trinity... Don't ask.

You don't pay for updates, Tweetie 1 had 7 free updates. Updates within the 2.0 version number will also be free. Same as EVERY piece of software for the desktop.
Tell me.. what will happen when Tweetie 3, 4, 5... comes out?
PAY AGAIN... AGAIN AND AGAIN... for minor upgrades.

I don't run script to enable it, i am enabling it manually from the preference pane in system preferences. It is because my dual G4 is always on and I don't have to turn it off. It is running as a server of my media files and my work station as well.

BTW, what is with people like you who think they need to relate everything to slavery, the holocaust, or racism? :o
Possibly because that is what's happening, wage slavery, deaths in Africa, the percentage of black people in U.S. goals, any of this making any sense to you?

What percentage of iPhone users are on Verizon (world wide)? Serious question, because I don't see how Verizon getting the iPhone 4 has anything to do with an iPhone 5 release date. I really doubt 4g will be coming with the next iPhone. Everyone seems to think Verizon and its customers have some sort of power over apple. Wasn't an issue for the rest of the world and all the carriers and customers that got iPhones mid-cycle between the 3GS and 4.
Agreed, Apple marches to it' s own beat.
They will however IMO make any new iphones with dual chips and (hopefully) more memory.
Still like my iphone 3GS and have the luxury to wait out any release as of September this year.
Don't always need the latest. If things work don't mess with it.
Like everybody I do have a wish list of what the next iphone I buy should have.
Usually Apple only gives you about half of what you want :-)

You know what people should be concerning themselves with today instead of this non-issue? The credit card and personal information of 77 MILLION users that was stolen from the Sony network this week. Now THAT is an issue.
PS. Do you think Sony will get sued?
This aint CNN pal...the site is dedicated to APPLE related rumors/news.
But hey, Ive been wrong once before:rolleyes:

I have a Mac Pro Quad core (early2009) with 1 gt120
As i understand it that there isnt a way to get 4 separate projectors (non-mirrored) with just this setup and a cheap DVI to 2 VGA splitter.
If i have 2 gt120s will i be able to run a 4 screen setup?
If so whats the cheapest way to get this setup to work?
Thanks
Miles

The question asked of heterosexuals =/= asked gay and bisexual men. The risk factor for straight people is risky sex, the risk factor asked for gay men is not risky sex, but sex at all - even once. Its not the same thing. If there was no bigotry behind the question it would be raised this way to all, no matter what orientation "have you had unprotected sex with more than one partner in the last 5 years, if yes have you been tested for HIV?"
Arguments that gay people shouldn't be allowed to give blood? Really? I give way to much credit to society sometimes. Equating homosexuality to prostitution or drug use is so incredibly ignorant.
This. About ten million times. :apple:
The irony of a forum with a very large gay and bisexual membership to ask for blood donations is beyond ridiculous.
Think this through, MacRumors, think this through.
So, the solution for the Red Cross is to ask "Are you hetersexual, bisexual, or homosexual? If yes, do not donate blood.".
That seems like a non-biased solution to me.

So you go with the company that has shown that is will look for any way to make an extra buck.
I trust Google a hell of a lot more than Apple.
Now that Apple is in the ads game I can tell you they will be a lot worse about sharing your data than Google ever was and will be.
That assessment of Apple's approach to those matters is quite unfair either because you're being disingenuous or because you are not really following Apple's business.
As an example, Apple has deliberately hurt its revenue by refusing to give in to magazines publishers that wanted to get consumer information of iPad users buying their magazines apps.

Hi All,
First off I am new here, so Hi again
I have a small problem getting Microsoft Outlook 2001 to use my 2003 Exchange server. I have to admit I am new to macs and am finding it a little hard to do anything but I am trying.
From what I can tell is that for some reason my the mac will not resolve the server name to an ip address. I mean when I look in the Outlook settings, under services --> properties if I place the servers IP address there and then the user name and then 'check the name' it resolves the name of the server and under lines the user name (which as far as I am concerned has worked).
Yet when I then launch Outlook I get a message saying folders could not be opened. The attempt to log on to the server failed..... Microdoft Outlook could not be started. The attempt to log on to the MS Exchange Server failed....................
What I have done so far:-
Updated the /etc/hosts file and added the ip address for the server (can ping both IP and name from the console and network util)
When in Outlook settings --> properties and user the server name instead of the IP address and try and check name I get an error.. The name could not be resolved. Network problems are preventing connection to the MS Exchange Server, Contact your system adminsitrator (me).
Sorry for the long post but this is a real problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
Ian
PS The only thing I can sort of think of at the moment is that Outlook starts I think in classic mode??? I am not sure if this starts a new shell and therefore ignores the /etc/hosts file and that is the reason why it can not resolve the server name. If I am right my next question would be where is the hosts file for the classic enviroment??
