I'm currently on Cingular and I'm not in love with my SE T637 all that much. I wonder what the price on this shiny new iPhone is going to be... If the syncing does not create duplicates in my Address book from the phone, I'll be very very happy.:)

I really can't believe some of the posts that have been made here.

To suggest that the people of Africa deserve to be wiped out by aids as they haven't evolved or kept up with the rest of the world is beyond contempt. I want to say something else but I'm just totally lost for words by your comments.

Yet another person who apparently either does not know how to read, or chooses to only read a portion of a discussion...

Nobody in their right mind would ever say that anyone deserves to be wiped out by a disease because their lifestyle and culture are different. That's a completely asinine and foolish line of reasoning. If you read closely, you'd see that the discussion was over (1) whether it is our place to impose our will, our culture, and our system of education on a society that has opposed that very idea all along, and (2) whether that imposition, if it were even possible, would solve the problem, or if the problem is instead more deeply rooted in that culture as a whole and is beyond repair by education and contraception.

It's a perfectly valid, intelligent, and reasonable discussion. It has nothing to do with approving of genocide or allowing the spread of disease. It's far more important than that.

I notice no one has commented on the Pope and the Catholic Church forbidding the use of condoms and the effect that has on spreading infection even further.

Oh boy... the Catholic Church is WAY too easy of a target. We should probably leave that one alone.

It would be a darn shame if they dwindled away to nothing. They need new leadership.
Yes they have their issues, but they will not dwindle away. Very few large scale enterprises stay on the upside all the time. Remember when Apple nearly bit the dust? It can happen to any of them. MS will be fine.

Because I actually care about my grandparents. They have done something genuine for me, they have cared for me, they have loved me, etc.

this love you have for your grand parents is called conditional love. AKA the love of a spoiled brat. AKA fake love.

EDIT: you know, if your parents thought of you this way, there would be absolutely no incentive to even want to feed you.

There is no real-world solution to this problem as long as Apple insists on vetting every app and update. No company can be perfect in such a vast (many thousands a week) undertaking, so every developer runs the risk that his app will be caught in some bizarre limbo while an easily-fixed bug sits out there slowly damaging the developer's name. Unfortunately, there are only two solutions to this problem: customer pressure for Apple to reduce its oversight (followed by complaints by those apparently scared of having to vet applications on their own), or lawsuits. I suspect the latter is the only plausible solution.

    Just FYI...

File size wouldn't affect performance at all, as long as you're copying between locations on the same drive. The "file" that you see in the GUI is actually a link to a location on disk where your data is; all the OS has to move is the link, which is very tiny.

Thanks for clarifying that for me! I don't like doing things that I'm not sure about. As I said, my being unsure stemmed from windows that would sometimes come up in older versions of Photoshop, when closing, that mentioned clipboard sizes being too large. Or something along those lines. Again, thanks.

Looks like the iPods are still at 5G with some tweaks, which is weird considering they had a whole year. I feel no urge to upgrade my current model no major difference for me. Search functions would be pretty sweet though. Wonder why they didnt just give the current 5G iPods that feature with a software update.

The new nanos look really tempting. a 4GB silver would go nicely with my PB.

Not trying to be a aluminum foil hat theorist here but this is the kind of small first step that leads us down a dark path to a "Minority Report" kind of future.

But the Minority Report had the most amazing designs, and everything looked flawless. And you got to sort data with your hands.

If something looks really good and have a great UI, then it can't be bad.

Well, what ever comes out, I hope it's not some upgrade or revamp. I wish Apple really does Think Different and releases new hardware that will make us say " That really is something new. "

    But, updates are always welcome.;)

Does anyone know how to get into the quick search on the 5G iPods? I updated mine with the 1.2 software but I only see the quick scrolling letter thing.

It seems like this feature is only available only on the new iPod (as many people previously mentioned). I can't help but wonder if this was purposefully left out, because you'd think it be easily added in a firmware update.

Oh well, the quick scroll thing is good enough for me...

Prior to the date being given out for the press event I was fully expecting a new MBP at Photokina.

However now given that it is on a Sunday I see no hope of an update. They wouldn't take down the store on a Sunday whereas the Apeture update will either be a free download or a preview of a 2.0 App therefore needing no major store changes.

PS Is there any precedence of hardware updates on a Sunday?

This is also another reason why I believe MBP updates will happen this Tuesday the 19th.

I really hope this happens but I have a feeling that it will be hobbled in some way. If it runs from an iTunes master copy of songs then it might preclude people uploading music that has been ripped from CDs or bought somewhere else (like Amazon).

This would be a really cool thing if they allow you to stream to your iPhone and use it with an iPhone compatible head unit in your car. That way I could carry some music on my iPhone for listening in the car and if I got bored with what I had or just wanted something different, I could stream from this cloud-based service.

There are a few head units that allow you to stream Pandora from your iPhone through your car stereo. Why not have your whole library like that?

People who speed and drive under the influence make me sick. Pull the apps. And when you catch the scum, throw them n jail and take away their licence. The don't deserve to walk among us.

The overwhelming majority of DUI/OVI offenders are otherwise law-abiding, taxpaying citizens who make a mistake and never repeat it again.

Mandatory jail time for OVI charges (which virtually all states now have), in this day and age, is akin to an employment death-sentence for many people who lose their job if they have to do time.

If anything, OVI penalties are already too harsh for first time offenders.

Then I'll be right back here complaining about how 8 cores isn't enough either.

I'm with you there. Although I don't do video compression but Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign work, I'm sure Adobe will manage to deliver a version of CS3 that still feels sluggish under 8 cores.

Somebody please explain to me what GW Bush has to do with a Greenpeace story out of the London Mac Expo?

I'd guess because we now live in an era, often associated with the Bush era, where crushing all dissent is considered no biggie by a large section of the fear-controlled, TV-addled masses?

Therefore any heavy handed, over the top, removal of protestors or dissenters is therefore viewed in relation to the current climate.

Nothing wierd about that - historians talk about 'Victorian values' to denote a wide collection of social and political mores. People see the politics of fear, of removal of long-held liberties, planting fake new stories in the press, shouting down or restricting of dissent to be the defining characteristics of the 'Bush era'.

And a large portion of that 99% of the market will find integrated graphics fine, until they venture to the Apple App Store, and find that their spanking new MBA have a video card not supported by 99% of the games on sale... In fact, integrated graphics are not only not supported, but are specifically singled out in most game's system requirements.

I don't question the gaming issue, I just wonder what percentage of MBP buyers would not buy because of the Intel graphics. My uneducated guess would be a very small percentage. Remember, Apple caters to the average consumer, not the geeks.

My point as just that if intel doubles the number of cores every 6th month, I believe that lifespan of a Mac is going to be substantially shorter. I doubt that the people who just bought a new MacPro realized that their computer would be as fast as an "entry level" computer within a year. Old Macs, like my own MDD, will be deemed to live in a time-bubble with now means of interacting with newer computers.
Things have certainly changed after the PPC ->x86 transition.

Software will also have to keep up and unless your software becomes massively multithreaded and what you're doing can actually be multi threaded there's no real advantage to multi-core CPUs.

This is already a problem with Quicktime in that it doesn't scale past 2 cores. You'll find half of your computer under utilised for instance when transcoding video in Quicktime.
