I can't help but wonder what the folks over at AVID are thinking of the new Final Cut Pro X. They are either terrified, or they have huge smiles on their faces thinking about all the new users they might be picking up this summer.
I saw a tweet yesterday from someone at the SuperMeet who said they saw a couple of Avid reps leaving the FCP X demo smiling. And based only on this brief preview of FCP X I doubt that is an exaggeration. I also heard that the crowd was split about 50/50 between people loving it and people being a bit apprehensive.

I had a chance to watch the full presentation this morning and some things looked very promising (compound clips, auditioning, clip metadata, new audio levels and key framing) while other things I'm less than sold on (magnetic timeline, digging through tons of footage in the new browser, possibly more mouse-centric interface, etc.,).

Can't say anything good or bad for sure though until it actually ships and gets into the wild.

Yeah, there was a blue version;) , and a magenta version:o, then the green version:D .

I think this is cross posted by accident. The colors refer to the iTunes logo color, not the Shuffles.

Nope. No C2D in the MacBook until 2007. Why? Distinguish product lines between MB vs. MBP with different chips. Also economics. With only CD in MacBooks, Apple makes more $$$ per MB.

The chip alone doesn't really distinguish the macbook from the macbook pro. In the wake of the first wave, the pro was upped in GHz just a bit so that no model was slower than a macbook, but for that period of time they use the same exact chip but were obviously not the same computer. The fact that the pro has better display real estate, a dedicated graphics card, the aluminum shell, 2 firewire ports, a slot for an express card, a double layer superdrive and now support for 3GB of RAM make a seriously big difference when compared to the macbook's hardware. simply adding C2D wont make it equal to the pro at all. also, how much more overhead does apple actually see compared to what they'd make if macbooks had core 2 duos in them?

Expect software announcements at an Apple special event on 30 January (the consumer release date for Vista, as if you didn't know already). There Steve will talk about Leopard's Top Secret features and the new iLife suite, just so that once MS have stopped kicking themselves after the release of the iPhone and the bruises are starting to heal, they can do it all over again. See Zunes and Vista in bargain bins all over the world (I know that Zunes are only on sale in the US at present, but in order to get rid of stock they will be put on sale everywhere without any software support whatsoever).

I have to disagree with your logic on this. It would be a big mistake to release Leopard, or for that matter have any sort of media event about Leopard on or around the time of Vista's launch. They should wait at least a few weeks after Vista's release.

It's not that Leopard doesn't have the potential ability to out-shine Vista, it certainly does. But as far as public attention goes, with the majority market share held by Microsoft, all eyes will be on Vista, as far as media coverage goes. While Leopard would certainly not be lost in the shuffle as far as Mac users go, any potential press that Apple could garner from it's release would be basically wasted. In fact, I could imagine such a move by Apple could be viewed as an "out of desperation" announcement, to the general (Non-Mac User) public and media alike.

Apple would be much wiser to release it a few weeks later, probably close to a month after Vista's release, at a minimum. That is, of course, if it's even ready to ship.

I love it. A database that contains all of your movements for months, unencrypted, is found on the phone. Apple's response? We're "uneducated" and just don't get it.

Flight for San Fran leaves tomorrow mid-morning. I booked pretty late so the wait didn't really kill me. In fact, I'm a little surprised how fast the time passed. I'll be through Wednesday and then it's the red-eye back.

Still no option on the keynote though. If anyone has the "means" to get me in, drop me a line. 8-)

Bernie Ecclestone has just bought out an authorised biography that he fully cooperated on and he is in the best of health, works full time and travels to every F1 race so I would not write off Jobs on the basis of a book

Oh, I'm not writing him off. I hope he sticks around for a long time.

I think it is a good sign.

It is an official biography which means he will spend the next few months co-operating, telling the author his life story so if he was a man on his last legs he wouldn't have the energy or the health to spend the next year reciting every moment of his life.

I think it may be a sign he will not return full time to Apple but I think he has a few years yet in him

When Robert Jordan, author of The Wheel of Time fantasy/adventure series of novels was told he would die before he could finish the 12th and final book in his 21-years-in-the-making series, he spent a much of his time and energy during his final two years compiling notes and telling his wife and the author who'd be hired to finish the series on how all of the plotlines should be resolved. And Christopher Hitchens, after being diagnosed with esophogeal cancer, has continued to work as much as his health permits him to because he finds value in doing so.

For those who want to read into this news one way or the other, I think it comes down to this: If Jobs considers his legacy to be of the utmost importance, then he could make this a top priority if given a terminal diagnosis. If he considers other things family, friends, his pet yorkie, his $1 nature/nurture wager with Bill Gates more important, he'd arrange to make them a priority.

The "Why now?" question can be answered one of two ways:
    1. He's dying.
    2. He's doing OK and has time to do so while on leave, so why not.

As long as we don't know the answer, this news just gives us something else to speculate about.

    Solid analogy.

We all know about the enforcement side of the burka, but we have yet to dissect the reason for same, as considered by the founders of the religion.

    I have a few.

    1) Stops 'grass is greener' by your neighbour

    2) Stops laughing at his 'Cracker Jack' surprise.

    3) Makes sure that no womb goes unused, in the service of Allah.

    Any others come to mind?

I will let the women at MR discuss this from the female side.

... but after seeing these video presentations, serve me a plate of crow and I can't wait until June. This is very, very impressive. Still lots of questions, ie Color, Motion, hell lets throw in Shake while we are at it. I'm assuming there will be other apps in the family to show up but this is quite impressive to say in the least.

"After the presentation, I spoke with Richard Townhill, Director of Pro Video Product Marketing for Apple (who served as the host for Apples presentation) who told me that the purpose of today is to focus exclusively on Final Cut Pro, highlight some of the new features, and give people a chance to see and comment on the new interface. We will have much more to say about both Final Cut and our other applications in the future."

(I wonder, if you're a Republican, how likely is it that that charity is a not-for-profit that you own yourself that channels money back to the Republican party? ;)

Good point, but in all fairness, I think that's more a "sleazy-individual" trait as opposed to being attached to any political party.

Partisanship aside, America gives plenty to charity (and that's something we can all be proud of) but I wonder how much of that goes to the truly needy (because 'needy' is what I instinctively think of whenever someone mentions "charity"). I did some light digging and found that "National Vice President, Division Services" at the American Cancer Society earns $1,550,705.00 per year. Nice gig, huh?

And he's not the most highly paid. I found another cancer charity that pays their top guy over $4 million. Have a look yourself: http://philanthropy.com/premium/stats/salary/index.php?searchFoundations=&Year=2010

I believe Apple does this on purpose. I remember when I had the 3G and "updated" it with the latest iOS and it turned it into a clunker. Apple didn't care and they didn't give people the option to downgrade the "upgrade". Apple we love your products, but please understand that we are hip to your tricks now. Geez.

Don't really know what you're talking about, but you can put any iOS version you want on your phone if you know how to use itunes correctly...

Tell us then because I am absolutely done with this PoS device now unless I can downgrade.

I'm obligated to fellow consumers not to keep giving money to companies who deliberately bork your device to force an upgrade.

Absolutely had enough of Apple now. Screw 'em.

Will the clip be as good for exercising as the dorky (but useful) stringy thing?

Again, I am worried about the moisture factor. The sport case was great, as it kept sweat out. Any amount of moisture through that back switch and the thing died - eventually what killed mine, I think.

I'd be hesitant to wear the thing while running in fear of sweating on it.
